This Corrupt Generation

On Pentecost Peter exhorted the Jews assembled before him saying: "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. His admonition is as true today as it was on the day of Pentecost. We, like the Jews before Peter, must ask ourselves: "What are we to do, my brothers?" Like the apostles, we also have the same mother who has promised to help those who seek her aid. One way to seek her aid is to let our love and devotion to Mary be evident. How can we do that? Well, how do people let others know of their devotion to their university or city sport's team? Don't they proudly put something on their car or van? Why should we, who love Mary, be ashamed to do the same for her?

We have created a decal that can easily be put on one's car or van. The decal appears at the top of this page. It is the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas. Above the image we read:

Mary, Mother of God. Beneath the image, we have carefully chosen a question for the reader to consider.

The question is deliberately ambiguous. It reads: Can Jesus love the world through me?

As you read the question, you might think the 'me' is yourself. That is good. If on the other hand, you read it and think it refers to Mary, that is also very good. The answer is the same no matter who you think the 'me' refers to. The question, unlike so many Christian statements on cars, is not judgmental or self-righteous. The question is asked to get the reader to search his or her heart to come up with their personal answer. We know all of Christ's teachings can be summed up in love of God and love of neighbor. The question on the decal brings the reader to the heart of the gospel: love.

The first day, we were preparing the decal at Kinkos. An older couple saw us working on it. The wife turned to me and said: "I am not a Catholic but I love what you have on your van. It is not judgmental and you have asked the question we all need to ask ourselves. Thank you."

On Holy Saturday morning, I went to Miejer's Thrifty Acres. As I returned to my van, a Jehovah Witness came up to me. I invited her to come closer to our van and look at the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I asked her if she knew who it was. Quizzically she answered, "Is that Mother Mary?" For the next few minutes I was able to share with this women about the miraculous image of Mary. Shortly after that, our conversation ended. But what happened? This lady approached me to attract me to her belief but instead I was able to share with her my love of the woman represented by this miraculous image. You see, if we give Mary a little 'window', she will work powerfully through our timid efforts to draw people to her son.
